Shakira Reflects on Life, Motherhood, and Healing After Split From Gerard Piqué

Shakira is sharing a deeply personal look into her life after parting ways with soccer star Gerard Piqué. The 49-year-old singer, known worldwide for hits like Dai Dai, spoke with People about the challenges she’s faced, the lessons of motherhood, and how she’s finding strength in rebuilding her life.

The Colombian star described the realities of navigating heartbreak while caring for her children, Milan, 13, and Sasha, 11. “When everything around you seems to fall apart, you still have to make breakfast, take the kids to school, pay the bills, and keep moving forward. Life doesn’t pause,” she shared. Shakira credits motherhood with giving her a new perspective on resilience. “My children are the greatest gift and constant teachers. Every day they remind me what truly matters.”

Regarding romance, Shakira revealed that she isn’t focusing on relationships at the moment. “Right now, my priority is raising my kids. Love will come in its own time, maybe when they’re older. This period has shown me just how resilient we can be,” she said.

The split from Piqué, whom she met while filming the Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) video, was finalized in 2022 amidst reports of infidelity. The experience inspired one of her most personal hits, Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53, a raw, uncensored track created with producer Bizarrap. “Writing that song was like therapy. I needed to express myself fully,” Shakira explained. “The energy in the studio was electric—we were celebrating every beat, not knowing it would hit No. 1 on Spotify the same day.”

Beyond music, the process of turning pain into creativity has been liberating. Shakira reflected, “That track made me feel lighter, empowered, and more confident. Hearing from women who felt seen and inspired by it reminded me that strength can emerge from the hardest experiences. I used to think I was fragile, but life has proven otherwise.”

Through heartbreak, healing, and the joys of motherhood, Shakira is redefining herself on her own terms—balancing fame, family, and personal growth with a sense of purpose and authenticity.
